Volunteer With Us!

SJH is able to carry out its mission thanks to the generosity of the hundreds of volunteers who provide over 40,000 hours of service each year. We could not survive without this generous outpouring of time and talent.

Please be sure to schedule your volunteer time in advance. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator today and let them know what day works best for you. Please note: there are no weekend volunteer opportunities.

Popular volunteer activities

  • Serving lunch during our Day Services Program
Saint John’s provides over 325 meals each weekday at noon, to homeless men. For scheduling volunteers, see our Lunchtime Volunteer Instructions.
  • Other Opportunities
    Sorting Gifts (seasonal)
    Driving (seasonal)

Other ways to help

  • Schools, Confirmation, Youth Ministry
Please note that SJH cannot accommodate on site volunteer service for children under the age of 18. However, there are wonderful ways to teach young people about the joy of service to God’s beloved poor. Just choose a time of the year that works for you. Plan a collection with a class or classes, and have the children write notes or greeting cards to attach to the items. For details on this and other off-site opportunities, please contact the Saint John’s Volunteer Coordinator
  • For Our Casserole Parishes
Just gather some items (don’t forget the guys when you are going through your closets) and take them to your Casserole drop-off location. These items will be picked up along with the casseroles.

If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering with SJH, contact Marion “Tootsie” D’Ambrosio, our Events and Volunteer Coordinator, at mdambrosio@chs-adphila.org.

Volunteers In Action

SJH Volunteer Hugh Layden

Whatever their need, Saint John’s Hospice volunteer, Hugh Layden, is always there to offer a warm smile and welcome encouragement to all. What Hugh likes best about Saint John’s is “just being here, hanging around with the men.” He laughs as he talks about the friendships he has made here: “We have lots of chats about baseball … We are all Phillies fans around here, in good times and bad.”

St. Joseph’s University Alums ready to lend a helping hand

“Being able to volunteer at Saint John’s put a smile on all of our faces and allowed each of us to do more by serving the needs of the homeless of our city.” Rich Brennan, SJU Global Community Day of Service Coordinator.
